If the wounded area is closed, the cells begin to differentiate again and build up a new tissue. Causes of wounding might include DNA damage, telomere shortening and oxidative stress.
In humans, skin stem cells are located in the basal layer where 2-7% of cells are stem cells. Their primary roles are to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues.
