Targeting Different Types of Acne Takes the Right Stuff

There are many different types of acne.  Understanding the root cause and how each display in the skin will help you diagnose which type of acne you are working with to determine what products would get the best results. In some cases, it will be clear cut, but other times, the “right stuff” may be a process of elimination.

Hormonal Acne (Acne Vulgaris)
The most common type of acne, hormonal acne primarily affects adolescents. It is characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts, and sequelae – such as pitted or hypertrophic scars. Acne vulgaris is caused by Propionibacterium acnes, also known as P. acnes (bacteria). It typically allows for good extractions; however, the right enzymes, acids and other exfoliating ingredients can help do most of the work.

For home care, BHA Refine Gel is perfect for hormonal skin as it combines salicylic and azelaic acids to breakdown cellular buildup, reduce impactions, balance excessive sebum production, smooth skin and provide strong antibacterial support.

Cystic Acne
This type of acne is typically triggered from an excess buildup of sebum along with dead skin cells. This combination blocks oxygen from getting to the cells and increases the P. acne bacteria. In some cases, due to the tightness of the keratin, it will start to grow underneath the skin. Typically, these lesions are not extractable and forcing this can lead to scarring, which is why using ingredients that help draw bacteria to the surface are recommended.

Clay masks in the treatment room and at home, such as Perfection Clay, is crucial to achieving results. Our mask is formulated with a blend of detoxifying clays to draw out impurities and salicylic acid for exfoliating support.  Enhanced with melaleuca alternifolia oil for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory support and totarol to inhibit oxygen consumption, it effectively suffocates the P. acne bacteria without over drying the skin.

Acne Cosmetica
This type of acne is caused or stimulated by cosmetics. Typically presenting as non-inflammatory, it is indicated by small, slightly raised red lesions, whiteheads and occasional pustules. This can usually be corrected by eliminating the acne-producing cosmetic/s and replacing it with non-comedogenic products and a home regimen focused on cleansing and protecting. For home care use, try incorporating Acne Remedies Purifying Gel Cleanse to cleanse breakout-prone skin and remove toxins. And remember – ALWAYS remove your makeup and wash your face before going to bed!

Acne Mechanica
This is acne that forms because of friction and constant pressure, or repetitive physical trauma to the skin such as rubbing from hats, face masks, phones, sunglasses, etc. A home-care regimen that includes a clarifying essential with salicylic acid such as Blemish Serum will help restore the skin to health.

The Acne Remedies brand has two travel collections that are great starter kits, depending on the type of acne being targeted.

Clear Relief Collection offers a complete, synergistic regimen to help treat stubborn blemishes and bring balance to acne-prone skin.  Using exfoliating support from salicylic acid, the anti-inflammatory benefits of green tea and aloe vera, combined with the healing power of epidermal growth factors and biotin to improve the overall appearance of skin.

Our Cystic Relief Collection is suited for thicker, oilier, more problematic skin.  A comprehensive system that decreases surface oils and acne breakouts, reduces bacteria and inflammation while providing healing, rejuvenating support through the use of glycolic, salicylic acids, growth factors, totarol and detoxifying clays.  Reveal a clearer, healthier skin!

When it comes to acne skin, there is no one-size-fits all. Effective acne management starts with proper diagnosis and frequent check-ins with a skin care professional to ensure proper management and effective treatment.
